3D printing and medicine
The two videos provide important information about 3D printing that is important in the medical field. Several pros and cons of 3D printing can be deduced from the two videos that will help in the medical field for the treatment of various diseases. 3D printing is important because it helps in rapid medical prototyping. 3D printing is always cheaper and, at times, faster than the standard manufacturing systems that are used in the manufacture of the medical equipment. It, therefore, means that the use of 3D printing can aid in rapid design, printing, and testing the developed prototypes to be used in the manufacture of medical equipment. Prototyping is an important step in the manufacture of medical equipment that can be used in dealing with various diseases that the people suffer from in society. The traditional design and manufacturing systems may take a long time, as opposed to 3D printing. The other advantage of 3D printing is that it helps in the manufacture of personalized medical equipment and implants that can be used in the treatment of patients with specific medical conditions. 3D printing helps in making medical equipment for patients with given physiology hence improve the medical outcomes immensely for the benefit of the society as a whole. 3D printing tools are now used in the development of various treatments for patients with several medical conditions. The other importance of 3D printing is the fact that it helps in the manufacture of the products and services when they are demanded. For instance, in case of a disease outbreak that requires the development of medical equipment to deal with it, 3D printing will be used in coming up with the prototypes for the medical equipment that will be useful in the process and in so doing, the process of making the medical equipment will be easier in the process and will help in dealing with the medical challenges that are faced in the given society.
Several disadvantages are associated with 3D printing that may make professionals use the technology or ignore it. One of the challenges of using technology is the fact that it is not eco-friendly. The technology uses plastics and high energy that are harmful to the environment. The medical equipment manufacturers that have the intention of using the 3D technology will have to accept the environmental costs that come with its use or make a decision to look for an alternative. The other disadvantage of 3D printing is that it leads to the production of objects that have inconsistent quality. A design error may lead to the manufacture of a batch of items with the same error. Correcting the error may be very expensive for the company; hence there is a need to exercise caution in the design as well as in the implementation of the design to ensure that the products that are produced are of the right quality and that there is no danger associated with it. It is also important to note that there are limited options for the 3D printing material.
