Apply Psychological Knowledge Ethically and Safely to Real-World Problems
Why this standard is of relevance and importance to your development as a Psychologist
It is part of the BPS and HCPC codes of conduct for psychologists to act with integrity and to behave ethically (Iqbal, 2015). Therefore, it is essential to get used to acting in this manner and applying learning from now. Ethics is essential in psychology because it helps in protecting the reputation of this discipline. Ethics and integrity set out the boundary that helps in protecting participants in research. A psychologist needs to ensure that the guidelines on integrity and ethics are followed. Psychologists need to follow these ethical codes as prescribed by BPS (Iqbal, 2015). Some of these codes include; keeping the data from participants confidential, giving participants the right to withdraw at any point of the study, and protecting participants from psychological or physical distress. Others include; ensuring that participants have consented to any study and should not be coerced. It is also essential to ensure that psychologists avoid deception. These ethical codes will ensure objectivity in the psychologist’s part and give results based on facts.
Critically assess my status to benchmarked skill
I do not have experience as a psychologist because I have not begun practicing. However, I have had a lot of experience during classwork and other activities I have undertaken during this program. The course work has exposed me to various skills in ethics and integrity. I have an understanding of the historical context of ethics and integrity in psychology. I also understand the scientific backing and importance of ethics and integrity to psychology. Also, I have family members who have helped in putting these skills to practice. The skills gained have enabled me to learn on different ways to deal with different situations and remain objective in my research as a psychologist. I now understand the different theories in psychology where various disciplines stem from (Moreno & Park, 2010). I understand the importance of integrity and ethics in doing my research and finding reliable. These skills are essential in ensuring the applicability of the findings in any part of the world.
Reflection on how I have acquired these benchmarked skills across the course (specific examples of progression from year to year)
I have had a lot of experience with ethics and integrity that have enabled me to acquire these skills. Going through various theories of integrity has made me reflect on the importance of ethics and integrity. These reflections and through the module have enabled me to internalize ethics and integrity to ensure that I can apply them when I begin practicing as a psychologist. Also, beginning the program, I had to start with the basics of different units in psychology. These basics formed the foundations on ethics that have enabled me to build the knowledge and skills in ethics and integrity from one year to another progressively. Additionally, I have made good use of online materials and the library. I have gone through peer-reviewed journals on ethics and integrity to ensure that I understand the application and importance of these two concepts. Group discussions and classmates have been meaningful too. They have enabled me to share knowledge in areas I was not aware of.
Targets set to develop my skills (concerning the benchmarked skills, specific evidence for development activities engaged into target these skills/needs)
The first step that I will do is to work on my problem-solving skills. It is crucial to understand how to synthesize problems in psychology to ensure better analysis and final results. Also, I want to undergo apprentice training. It is essential to get attached to the expert in this field to ensure I can understand how to practice. It has always been cited that sometimes what is taught in class is the foundation, and practicing builds on what one has already learned. Getting an apprentice or working under an expert will give me practical skills in this field and, therefore, better my undemanding on the application of ethics and integrity (McIntosh, 2005). Firsthand experience is crucial to link what I have learned in class and actual work. Through this approach, I will be able to build upon my skills and build chances of making mistakes that can affect my reputation as a psychologist.
How you could or have used the generic/transferable skills you have developed so far for your future career
To advance my career using generic skills, I am going to set goals. Goals give purpose and, to a large extent, the reason for existence (Poppes et al., 2002). I want to set achievable goals with timelines. Achieving these goals will be important milestones in my life and career. Secondly, I intend to enroll in further education in the future. Graduate studies are essential for acquiring research skills and other skills to give any proper insight into the field of psychology. Generic skills, such as communication, will enable me to keep an excellent interpersonal relationship with my colleagues and patients. Interpersonal skills are essential in a managerial position, which is my ultimate goal in my career ladder. Communication skills are also crucial in diagnosis when dealing with which patients and, therefore, quality results. Quality and reliable results will make me dependable and can even take a consultancy position.
My future action plan future development needs following graduation (or completion of your course), what steps will you take to enhance your development as a psychologist further
The ultimate goal of any education is putting what one has learned into practice. Putting these skills into practice is essential in changing many people’s lives, especially when dealing with mental problems. According to Sheehan et al. (2015), every Briton has a mental illness. The figures look like ticking time bomb that needs to be dealt with. I want to practice as a psychologist to change lives and give hope to those who have lost hope. I will also ensure that I participate in different programs and policy formulation meant to deal with mental health and psychological studies. As stated earlier, I want to take a managerial position in the future, which means that I have to undertake postgraduate programs. I will need to enhance my research skills, and those are some of the actions I am going to undertake.
