Case study reflection
Q1: Mr. Tunnel’s actions were not ethical because he rushed to report a matter that he had not taken much time to investigate. It is important not to make assumptions about some things that happen in the school because it may cause much harm to the people in the school. Mr. Tunnel should not have reported the matter to the superintendent before conducting a credible investigation that could inform him of what was happening. It is important to note that things are not always as they seem, and there is a chance of making wrong judgments that will affect the people negatively. The fact that Mr. Tunnel did not ask for Mrs. Collinwood’s part of the story before reporting to the superintendent. It is always important to allow the suspect to defend himself or herself before making a judgment against him or her. The fact that the principal had reported the matter to the superintendent means that the case will be taken seriously, and there is a chance that the judgment would be given without allowing Mrs. Collinwood to defend herself, and that is what happened. She may then be punished even though she is innocent just because of a misunderstanding that occurred.
Q2: It is important to note that the information that Mrs. Cole gave was very important and very sensitive. It, therefore, means that whoever received the information should not rush in making decisions. If I was the Mr. Tunnel and Mrs. Cole provided the information to me, I would conduct the necessary investigation to find out if the information that has been provided is true. I would summon Mrs. Collinwood and hear her part of the story before making any decision. It is important to be just in all the engagements in the workplace, and one way of becoming just is by making sure that adequate information has been collected before taking action on an individual. It is important to note that there are several reasons why some people may report the mistakes committed by others in the workplace. We may not know the relationship that Mrs. Cole had with Mrs. Collinwood. The relationship could lead to one person implicating another in the crime, which calls for keenness when dealing with such issues in the society, and that is why I would choose to investigate the matter before I take any decision.
Q3: One of my roles as an administrator is to ensure that the staff in the catering department are adequate in such a way that various functions in the school go on as smoothly as possible. I, therefore, have to hire the best competent catering staff that will prepare lunch and breakfast for the students in the institution. It is also my role to make sure that I hire honest employees that will work better without causing problems to the people in the society. I also have the role of supervising the kitchen staff frequently to ensure that they are working the way they are supposed to do. It is my moral duty to report anything that does not go right in the catering department so that the necessary measures can be taken. For instance, I have to report when I witness theft among the kitchen staff. My role is also to keep the principal posted about the issues that occur in the kitchen department because I am his representative when it comes to the non-academic matters in the institution. It is important to note that food is important in society, and its essence cannot be overemphasized.
Q4: I think that Mrs. Collinwood should be given a chance to defend herself. A proper investigation has to be done with regard to the matter because we cannot depend on word of mouth when it comes to punishing the people. A proper investigation into the matter will give us the next line of action to take because we will have understood the truth, and we will have the information about the people that are supposed to be punished in the process. Mrs. Collinwood might have seen it wise to take the milk to the dogs instead of discarding it, but she could have communicated her decision. Even if her intentions are pure, the fact is that she took the milk without permission. Proper investigation is what will help us decide whether it is better for Mrs. Collinwood to continue serving the suspension, or she should be given a lighter punishment. It is always wise to ask for permission before making a decision to use the items that have been bought in the school, and anybody who takes it without the required permission is committing illegality; hence is supposed to be punished.
Q5: All the stakeholders of the school need to know about the issue; hence it will be important to tell them as a way of maintaining transparency in the school. The parents and other stakeholders in the school deserve to know how their money is being used in the institution and how it is helping the people. The faculty is also supposed to know about the incident. All the parties that will be informed about the incident will be given verified information as a way of making sure honesty prevails. Giving them unverified information will mean that we are going against the rights of Mrs. Collinwood. She needs to be listened to in a bid to find information about what really happened in the institution.
