Communication in healthcare
The video titled “Is the Obesity Crisis Hiding a Bigger Problem?” has taught me several lessons that I had not thought about. One of the concerns that are coming up from the video is that the cause of obesity may not be the most visible one, but rather it may be as a result of the underlying issues that people are not thinking about. I have learned that it is better to look for the real cause of obesity as opposed to making assumptions on what the causes may be. The other lesson from the video is the fact that one may think that he or she is doing everything right to prevent obesity when, in the real sense, it is not what is supposed to be done. The presenter notes that it is very worrying when one is doing his or her best to deal with a given condition but does not succeed in the process.
The video has changed my thoughts concerning various issues in society. I now understand that it is important to assess a situation before making any judgment. It is easier to conclude that obese people are not following their dietary requirements without taking time to understand the main cause of the issue. For instance, one may associate obesity with diet when, in the real sense, there is a more serious issue that is causing the problems among the patients. The video relates to some areas of healthcare that I can relate to personally. I understand that there are times when we make judgments when all that we are supposed to do is to find a variety of solutions that may be used to deal with the problem. The video relates to the fight against diabetes. I always thought that diabetes was caused by the high level of sugar intake that could cause the pancreas to strain, but it turns out that there are many causes of diabetes and if anyone wants to protect himself or herself from the disease then he or she has to look for various causes that may cause the disease.
The video is related to the interactions between the patients and the physicians. The physicians can get various insights from the video on how they are supposed to handle the patients that have been put in their care. One lesson that the physician can learn from the video is to always look for the underlying issue that is causing a medical condition as opposed to being judgmental about it. For instance, it is important to be keen to understand the cause of obesity as opposed to judging the patients and blaming them for not taking a good diet. The physicians should be at the forefront in helping the patients I deal with the medical conditions as opposed to judging them. The speaker shows that it is important for the physicians to give attention to the patients so that they can understand the problems that the people are facing in society.
