form of English
Amy Tan’s “mother tongue” is a well written article which addresses issues that have been ignored by many in the writing field. This article mainly highlights how different people speak English differently. The differences however, should not make people feel that their English is less important because it is considered limited or imperfect. I think people, especially immigrants should be encouraged to write whatever English they are comfortable with because language is always rich.
In “mother tongue”, Amy Tan’s claims to emphasize the idea that it is important that anyone expresses their views and thoughts even if their English is considered limited. She explains how the form of English she learned from her mother has helped her a lot in life. She says the English, though considered limited, has helped enrich her language and literature. Therefore, Tan asserts that every form of language, whether limited or perfect, is equally important.
The conclusion on how the author being to write and how her writing was an article of herself and reflect on her mother.
The major key point is to explain that there are different forms of English, however what matters is the value of our words and not how ‘broken’ the English is. Tan says that she used to consider her mother’s English as broken or imperfect and her thoughts unimportant, however she realized her mother’s English helped shape her life and it was important after all.
Tan used to believe that since her mother’s English was considered ‘broken’, her thoughts were also valueless. “I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is, because she expressed Them imperfectly, her thoughts were imperfect.” (Tan, 2)
Tan admitted that she, and many more people surrounding her, considered her mother’s English as imperfect. Hence, they considered her thoughts as imperfect therefore her words had no value to them. Later she explains that no matter the kind of English or language one speaks, their thoughts and views are important and are of value. I think the author is right because many a times we judge people by the way they speak and not by the message they have. People who speak ‘broken’ English are not usually taken seriously as in the case of Tan’s mother. People should be given a chance to freely express themselves using whichever way they want to communicate, as long as they are understood. Our first language shaped our languages, therefore each form of English or a language is rich in itself.
The Authors Interdiction was clear on what the essay is about.
Tan highlights the challenges her mother went through as an immigrant who could not speak fluent English, showing that people do not appreciate or embrace ‘limited’ English. Immigrants who are not native English speakers go through many challenges because they are not usually taken seriously or their thoughts considered important.
Tan admits that she had viewed her mother’s as limited because of her English. “I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother’s “limited” English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English.” (Tan, 2) She further explains that sometimes she transacted business on behalf of her mother because the English of Tan’s mother affected on how people perceived her. “My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was a teenager, she used to have me call people on the phone and pretend I was she. In this guise, I was forced to ask for information or even to complain and yell at people who had been rude to her.” (Tan, 3)
Tan explains that as an immigrant, her mother went through a lot of challenges. People, including Tan perceived her differently or even treated her without respect, just because she spoke English that was considered broken. I agree that immigrants go through challenges as they go on with their day to day life. They are not treated seriously or given the respect they deserve just because they speak imperfect English. Tan says that her mother asked her to call people for information or to complain and yell at those who had previously been rude to her.

Tan highlights the richness imperfect English can bring to society.
Article. Include the evidence in the textbox. (Remember to put quotation marks around direct quotes.) Tan explains how her mother’s imperfect English is rich, she says “I wanted to capture what language ability tests could never reveal: her intent, her passion, her imagery, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.” (Tan, 4)
Tan explains that as much as people consider imperfect English as less important, the language very rich in itself. I totally agree that every form of language is rich in form as imagery, passion, rhythms and speech of the speaker depending on the intent. Tan easily brings out this richness through her mother’s ‘broken’ English. Every language whether English or others are all very important because each language is rich in itself. Therefore everybody, no matter the language they speak, or whether they speak limited English or perfect English, should be accorded the respect they deserve. This is because, the language is just as rich as any other and it is the words, imagery, rhythms and many other aspects that really portray it value.

This article generally allows us to realize how important the forms of languages we speak are. Every form of language like for example ‘broken’ English is very important because it is rich in itself. It allows speakers to express their thoughts and views. Hence it should not affect the value of our words, but should be embraced and respected by others.
My first insight is that what someone want to communicate is more important than the way they will say it. We should try to get the thoughts or views of a speaker instead of ignoring them because they speak broken English. Secondly, simply because your English is perfect does not mean your thoughts and opinions are more important than those of someone who speaks broken English. People should be more tolerant with each other, if you speak better English than me, it is wise that you don’t look down upon me.
