Healthy eating and focusing on food quality are important to prevent nutrition-related diseases and weight gain. Nowadays, the rate of chronic diseases has increased dramatically in the world and become threat to human health. And it caused largely by unhealthy eating patterns and sedentary lifestyle. Recently there are many ways to improve the health by using food, so people are becoming interested in preventing disease and enhancing their health and the belief in the positive effects of food on health and well-being is developing with the years. One of them is Matcha. Matcha (literally means fine powder tea in Japanese language) is one of the oldest traditions of Japanese culture. It used in traditional Japanese tea ceremony and in modern days is used as flavor and dye foods. The tea plant Camellia sinensis is grown in mild climatic and shaded condition 3-4 weeks before harvesting (Dietz, Dekker, & Piqueras-Fiszman, 2017) and goes through several phases, from the very beginning of plantation, harvesting, steaming, cooling and drying, grinding and finally to prepare it (Fujioka et al., 2016).Matcha tea is made with finely ground green tea leaves that are rich in phytochemicals, contains high amounts of polyphenols, free amino acids, L-theanine, and caffeine, the most particularly polyphenol(catechins). 80% of total polyphenols in green tea are catechins. The epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant catechin in green tea leaves and contributes to 50% of total catechins in tea leaves. It is also found at low levels in a range of foods including, red berries, apples, nuts, and legumes (Phongnarisorn, Orfila, Holmes, & Marshall, 2018). Most people Adopting it as a healthy alternative to morning coffee. Hence, it is been used as a quality indicator in green tea products. Because of the processing methods of the leaves, green tea has a high content of catechins compared with black tea.
Recently Matcha tea gaining its popularity in recent years because of the catechins that found in green tea have been shown its potential roles and benefit in preventing many diseases such as cancer, diabetes, chronic inflammation, and its role in psychobiological effects, Matcha tea components contribute to the antioxidant capacity with EGCG considered the bioactive compound. Besides that, gaining awareness is a complex process while trying to reach a wide range of students in King Abdelaziz University. Introducing a concept or a fact to someone is only the first step. This fact either gets pushed out of the person’s mind or gets registered in his psyche as knowledge. The most significant step to gain awareness is when someone uses this knowledge to bring about an attitudinal or behavioral change. This is when the person is finally productively aware of the concept or fact. Consequently, actions would be taken to make students have the farthest awareness enough are numerous, the used methods would be illustrated more in the coming parts. Matcha has a great number of pros and few drawbacks, only if we control its cons very well, we will get the ultimate benefit. This study aims to show and educate people about Matcha green tea and its benefit.
