Power theory
As per the power theory domestic violence often result from power struggles that engulf most families and societies today. The theory asserts that the power struggle is entrenched within the family and society through gender and age balance. The power theory depicts how Structural violence at the international level occurs within the family setting (Payne, 2010). By starting that when a greater, stronger, and bigger are in a position to get more resources they will dominate over the less fortunate, weaker, and smaller members of the family with limited or no resources. The theory of power also depicts societal contribution to the domestic violence as from time immemorial male gender has always and automatically been granted permission to dominate and rule over the other family members specifically the female gender, in many occasions these privileges have been abused and women left at the mercies of their male masters depicting interpersonal institutional structural violence.
Stress theory
Stress theory assert that domestic violence is always as a result of stress, whether personal, economical, and social, the rise in tension and tress facilitates domestic violence. Stress theory asserts that individuals in the society of families who feel that they are socially neglected, victimized, power disparity, and abuse drugs are more likely to be violent to their partners. As per the theory power disparity might cause violence and at the same time might not cause violence depending on how the situation at hand would have been handled. Stress theory asserts that social neglect and drug abuse within the family catalyzes violence a great deal (Payne, 2010). For domestic violence victims, social neglect makes them feel that nobody cares about them and there is no possible way that they can bail themselves out. Even though, violence perpetrator may get some immediate relief after abusing his/her partner the abuser my also feel guilty and ashamed of his actions. The stress theory encourages individuals to develop a culture of dialog amongst family members in order to help in stress releasing and providing solutions to problems before escalating and resulting in violence in the long run.
A keen look and an in-depth analysis of the different reasons for domestic violence targeting mostly women and other age groups within the society. It depicts the etiology of violence is an indicator of historical injustices and inequalities both economically and administratively between women and men. The injustices in the distribution of resources have led to discrimination and domination of women by men, resulting in the prevention of women from fully realizing their progress. Domestic violence is most cases originate from the cultural forms, specifically the dangerous effects of some languages, races, religions, and sex (Jackson, 2008). Domestic violence is also fueled by social pressure, more so the shame of judging some acts that a partner may make.
Nonexistence of legislation that criminalizes domestic violence; lack of political goodwill to amend the standing law; insufficient effort of the government to conduct civil education, aimed at sensitizing the communities on the negative impact of domestic violence. Lack of proper and efficient mechanisms of monitoring and dealing with the perpetrators of domestic violence, which is the only way the war on domestic violence will be won. Even though dealing with the violence in totality may be a change couples in marriages should always seek assistance of sociologists, or marriage chancellors in order to help address the challenges that they face.
