predict someone’s behavior
Discussion Reply. If someone can accurately predict someone’s behavior, then one can say that his behavior was determined. The reason why I feel this way is because thei situation reminds me of casual determinism. Casual determinism is the idea that every event was caused by past events and by the laws of nature. Casual determinism is a very reliable theory to believe in. The reason why is because it can be supported by every branch of science, including psychology.
Speaking of science, predicting human behavior led to the nature vs. nuture debate. Does our DNA determines our behavior or does our upbringing determine our behavior? Psychologists and behaviorists tried to predict human behavior. Furthermore, some of their attempts have been successful. For example, B.F.Skinner and his mentor, John B. Watson, believed that how we were raised determine our future behaviors. They proved this by experimenting on pigeons. He was able to train his pigeons to perform any tasks by giving them rewards. These results led them to believe that human behavior can be predicted by how we were brought up. On the contrary, some scientists believe that human behavior can be solely predicted by our genetic makeup. In addition, sociobiologists believe that human behavior can be predicted by looking at our genes. For example, a twin study conducted by Thomas J. Bouchard, revealed that not only can genes shape our physical characteristics ,but it can also shape our mental characteristics as well, such as personality, personal interests, and social attitudes. Although having the proper environment is crucial to genes, genes do play a major role on the way we think and act. It is certain that both nature an nuture play a huge role in determining human behavior.
In essence, if a psychologist could have been able to predict someone else’s behavior, then the behavior was determined. If a sociobiologist could have predicted someone’s behavior, then the behavior was determined. Thus, if a knowledgeable person was able to accurately predict someone’s behavior, then that behavior was determined. Casual determinism can perfectly explain that human behaviors are caused by past events and by the laws of nature.
