statistical conclusions
The main point made by this book is that most of the times human beings tend to rely and believe most of statistical conclusions made by scientist, mathematician or even other regular human being of which the fact is that this statistical conclusions are not always true at all the times. We can observe that after a sample of user’s used Doakes’ tooth paste and a statistic report was made showing 23% fewer cavities a conclusion was made that this toothpaste was outstanding than the rest in market place but in real sense is that tooth paste is just tooth paste and if a statistic sample could be made for the other tooth pastes in the market, still it is sure that other users of this products will report the same about fewer cavities if you use that toothpaste. But because statistic is a way of lying in order for companies to sell more products and make more profits, we the users become fooled by these statistical results. To be sure that statistics has really captured our minds, we can see that human beings have already made many assumptions such as; It takes a baby some specific months for him/her to know how to sit upright by himself/herself and thus if a baby does not do so for this particular period, parents become really worried that the baby is not normally but in real sense that is not true, the truth is that every human being grows in his/her on way and level and thus it can take some babies to grow faster and others could respond very slowing in their growth level. Another to show that statistic has really fooled as is that, in America most of the houses are two bedroom houses which were actually meant for 3 to 4 people but still what about the extended families which have a lot of people or maybe the small families of two or one. We should not conclude that all the families will consist of 3 to 4 people, houses should be made for everyone.
In the year 2012, I had a personal experience related to this. The experience is that in our society it is believed that most of the people who are successful in life, are the people who are really learned and have gone to Universities for further education forgetting the fact that are some people who are not that learned but have become successful in the different things they do such as sports, music or even farming. Because of this statistic influence, after finishing high school my mother wanted me to become a Doctor but in real sense, for me I have never thought of being a doctor at any point in my life and always my passion was music and I wanted to become a music producer. So my mother did not want to listen to me and forced me to go for this medical course. I went for the course and the good thing is that while at this university I met other people who had the same problem such as mine. We became good friends that we started meeting to practice on our music career, eventually we started performing at the University’s event and someone spotted us who gave us a multi-million record deal. Our dreams became true in that all of us had to drop out of school so as to take our music serious and to the next level and now we are living our dreams and we are also among the successful people in the society. That means that everyone was born to do something different from the others and anything so long as taken seriously can make someone successful and not that statistical conclusion that was made in our society that only the learned are the successful ones in the society.
Lesson Plan
Step 1:
The first thing to do, is that I will ask the students what they know about statistics and how they can define statistics in their own words and then me personally, I will define statistics for them and correct those who had made a mistake in their definition.
Step 2: Creation of interest to the students about this discussion
I will create an interest to the students by letting them sit into groups of five each for an interactive discussion.
Step 3: Challenging them
After the students have discussed about this topic amongst each other and told their individual stories about their own personal experiences, I will challenge them by giving them a vivid example of a real life statistical experience and ask them how they feel about it.
Step 4: Review some of things discussed
Because not all students are quick learners are review some of the details about this topic by further explanation.
Step 5: Objective
After this, to make the students not to forget about this day and lesson, I will ask them to explain about the objective of this lessen.
Step 6: Vocabulary
I will find the major vocabulary that I will be using in this discussion and also ensuring that I do not use advance vocabulary which the students cannot easily comprehend.
Step 7: Teach
After the discussion has ended, I will now teach about real life events of statistics and how it is a problem to the society.
Conclusion
Statistics is of great importance in our societies in different things but we should not allow some of the statistical findings to fool and brains wash us because not all of the findings are true and thus we should realize that we can make great mistakes by believing in some of these statistical sampling results.
